Extech’s New Current Clamp Meters Offer Small Size, Big Versatility

Extech Instruments announced today the launch of the Extech MA140 and MA145 compact clamp meters rated for AC and AC/DC current measurements up to 300A. The new mini-clamps can reach into tight spots while offering big clamp meter capabilities such as true RMS precision, an in-rush current mode, a low pass filter and a built-in non-contact voltage detector.

The compact Extech MA140 and MA145 are 2-in-1 tools that are small enough to fit naturally in the palm of your hand and still perform essential electrical troubleshooting tasks in plant predictive maintenance where equipment downtime is not available; electrical installations and repair; as well as commercial HVAC and refrigeration installation work and maintenance.

In addition to AC current measurements like the MA140, the MA145 can also be used for current testing on DC motors which are increasingly used in industrial applications where variable speed and maximum torque are appealing. Use the MA145 to test permanent magnet and wound field motors, as well as brushless blowers and stepper motors. Current loads on electrical systems in vehicles and marine craft can also be monitored with the MA145.

The 4-digit (6,000 count) readout is easy to read and you can operate the meter with one hand using an innovative, circular push-button array.  The 300A clamp meters are compact and easy to hold. Whether you are checking amp draws on VFD signals in an industrial setting or doing residential electrical work, the ample 0.8” (22mm) jaw opening is ultra-compact enough to fit in tight locations but can also accommodate bigger jobs, with conductors up to 300MCM.

“With Extech’s wide range of clamp meters, users always find an Extech uniquely tailored to his or her daily job challenges,” said Mike Fox, General Manager at Extech Instruments. Fox adds, “With the new MA140 and MA145, a well-rounded set of robust features are focused solely on ensuring advanced current testing capabilities—all in a small but rugged form factor.”

Advanced Capabilities: As dedicated current clamp meters, the MA140 and MA145 deliver both high value and high function. For example, the quick-responding in-rush current mode displays the highest current reading in the first 100 milliseconds after reaching a 5A trigger point. This capability is particularly useful when troubleshooting nuisance tripping, spurious resets and transients.  VFD mode uses a low-pass filter that ensures accuracy by providing high frequency rejection when measuring variable speed drives.

Both meters also offer a Smart Data Hold function which notifies users with audio and visual alerts when a reading exceeds 50 counts of a designated value. To simplify operation and avoid errors, the MA145’s auto-sensing mode distinguishes between AC and DC current signals and switches modes automatically.

Added Safety: A useful safety tool built into the new clamps is its non-contact voltage (NCV) detector. The detector quickly identifies the presence of voltage on live wires and alerts the user with an incremental audible and visual graph indicator. For users, this eliminates the need for a separate tester, offering added value, added safety, and less tool bag clutter.

Extech’s new MA140 and MA145 amp clamps are CAT III 600V-rated. Each comes complete with a soft carrying case and two LR44 batteries. For added peace of mind, Extech backs the meters with a one-year limited warranty.
